Update on Cleats at Cricket Fields

You have spoken and we have not only listened, but returned to the City of Toronto and aggressively voiced your concerns. With respect to the Sunnybrook cricket fields, the City of Toronto has relented and lightened its no-cleat rule from ‘prohibited’ to ‘preferred’. Therefore cleat use on the Sunnybrook cricket fields will be allowed at this time. However the City asks that we use proper judgment in assessing the field conditions and respecting the playing surface. That means if you are tearing up the field it is advised that you repair the field and change your footwear to a running shoe or turf shoe. If the City finds that we are disrespecting the cricket fields by tearing them up with cleats, our permit status on these fields is still in jeopardy. We ask you to comply with this recommendation.

This same principle will apply for Eglinton Flats Hockey Field #7 and G. Ross Lord Park.

In light of the City’s softened stance on this issue, the Toronto Ultimate Club will now rescind its no cleat rule that was introduced on June 5. This policy may be reactivated in 2008 or beyond should the City of Toronto change its policy again.

Previous league games that were played on these fields and the resulting scores will stand and there will not be replacement games. We will continue to do our best to fairly cycle all teams through these premier grade fields.

We apologize for the inconveniences that this may have caused, but in the end we have acquired what you have asked for and done so in accordance with the rules of the City of Toronto. We hope that you enjoy the remainder of the summer season and we thank all members for their valuable input!

Possible Sunnybrook Field Hockey Variations in July

A warning to all teams and players that on a few evenings in July we may be required to re-allocate our field designations on fairly short notice. Some of you may have already noticed the soccer field lines on Field Hockey 2 and part of Field Hockey 3 at Sunnybrook Park. This space is being used as a training space for the FIFA Under 20’s World Championships. Most team training sessions will be in the daytime, but we have been asked by the City to accommodate any possible night-time training field requests. This means we would have to run games North-South on Field Hockey 1, and other games would possibly be held on Hockey 3-4 (running West-East) depending on the night of the week. Should this happen we will contact teams as soon as possible to alert them of the changes. For now though, play on as scheduled and per the TUC Sunnybrook field layout for 2007. You can run your field setup over top of the soccer lines. We ask you to double-check the field layout and instructions for Sunnybrook Field Hockey throughout your games for the month of July.

FREE TUC TEAM TOURNAMENT – The Mid Season Classic July 21-22

This is a great opportunity for TUC teams to get more game experience, play teams from other nights, and prepare themselves for the playoff tournament format. All games will be played at beautiful Sunnybrook Park and will follow the league format (co-ed with 4/3 or 3/4 split). This tournament is free to all TUC teams and $15 for non-members (team captains will be asked to confirm team rosters). Each team will be guaranteed 6 games over the weekend, with games starting at 8:00 a.m. sharp on Saturday and Sunday. This event is always SPIRITED and focuses on participation and having fun. Our friends from GAIA, Daredevil Discs, Xilarate and Amcare will be on site with great offerings for TUC members. We’ll also have the usual tournament amenities available including physio, water, fruits and bagels. There will be prizing for top teams as well as spirit awards.

Registration is now open and the deadline is Monday, July 16th. Also, in conjunction with the event, we’ll be hosting a skill clinic on the Sunday. See clinic blurb for more details.

This past weekend the inaugural TUC Summer Experience Tournament was held at Sunnybrook Park. The beautiful weather made it a perfect weekend for both touring and recreational players to get outside and play some ultimate.

Lots of great ultimate was played with some very tight games. In the touring division, Monster came out on top with a 12-9 win over Liquid in the final. 4D won the TUC team division with a 13-8 victory over Play Anything. Congratulations to both teams on their wins!

Here are the champs, Monster (Touring Division Champs) and 4D (TUC Division Champs):

What is Spirit of the Game (SOTG)? It’s only the most IMPORTANT aspect of the great game of Ultimate, the underlying principle that governs our sport and separates us from the rest. Playing with Spirit doesn’t just mean sing a song after a game (although that is a fun and Spirited thing to do!), it means respecting your teammates, opponents, the rules, the community, and the game. SOTG means being honest and fair with yourself and with others on the field, as well as believing that they too are being the same. Playing with Spirit means that you accept there will be different perspectives on the field, and that you will calmly discuss those perspectives with your opponents. SOTG means you will avoid making contact with your opponents if possible. It means you will pick someone up when they fall, and apologize if you were perceived to be the reason they fell. SOTG means win or lose, you treat your opponents and your teammates the same way; with appreciation, with a smile, and with a high five after the game congratulating them on a fun competition. SOTG means showing up on time (game started ideally at 6:45pm and no later than 7pm). Playing with Spirit means involving and encouraging weaker players on your team. It also means correcting or stopping your teammates when they are not playing with Spirit. If things get heated in your game, remember SPIRIT OF THE GAME PREVAILS. Call a timeout. Captains and players talk to your teams. Talk to each other. Be fair. Be respectful. Wins and losses come and go, but what really matters is the game that we share and the relationships that we create through the great game of Ultimate.

Remember – ALWAYS PLAY WITH SPIRIT!

For May is Ann Chow!

May 2007 marks the first presentation of TUC's new Volunteer of the Month award. The recipient is Ann Chow. Ann contributed several evenings in May fine tuning one of our TUC teams as a coach for a day, and the Cedarvale revitalization project couldn't have happened without her.

Thanks, Ann!

The 2007 Volunteer of the Month awards are brought to you by Scallywags Bar & Restaurant. Each Volunteer of the Month receives $50 Scally's Dollars that can be used towards any purchase at Scallywags!

Looking for volunteers

The search is on for volunteers to help create the 2007 edition of “Pie Plate.” Pie Plate is our annual souvenir magazine that is distributed to TUC members. It is a recap of the year’s events and will include photos, editorials, highlights, league results, and fun Ultimate facts. Our 2006 edition was outstanding and we need new volunteers to step up and take the 2007 edition to the next level. If you are interested in contributing to the 2007 Pie Plate, please contact communications@tuc.org.
Mid-Season Tournament
July 21 - 22, 2007
Registration is now open!

The Toronto Ultimate Club's 2007 Mid-Season classic is a great opportunity for all TUC members and teams to test their skills against players from other TUC nights & divisions, and to prepare for the second half of the TUC Summer season and the drive to the playoffs. What better way is there to spend a summer weekend than enjoying some spirited Ultimate with your fellow TUC members!

This is one of the largest tournaments of the year with over 30 teams participating and our friends from GAIA, Daredevil, AMCARE, and Xilarate on site to share their product knowledge with you. Not to mention the usual TUC tournament amenities (bagels, fruit, water) will be provided.

TUC’s 2007 Mid-Season Tournament will take place on Saturday and Sunday, July 21 & 22. All games will be played at beautiful SUNNYBROOK PARK. The tournament is free of charge to all TUC members and $15 for non-members (team captains will be asked to confirm team rosters). The tournament follows the league format, as all teams must be Coed (4/3-3/4). Each team is guaranteed 6 games over the weekend, games starting at 9 a.m. both Saturday and Sunday. Entries for full TUC teams only will be accepted.

Registration is now open. The deadline for registration is Monday, July 16, 2007.

We hosted a team-specific clinic this past weekend at Riverdale Park and the turnout was fantastic. Thanks to all participants and of course our mighty volunteer army!

The next TUC clinic will reveal the Secrets of the Pro’s. It will be a skill clinic for intermediate level players and it will be in conjunction with the TUC Mid Season Tournament. This is a great opportunity for players who are already at Sunnybrook participating in the event, as well as individual players who just want to come out and join the clinic. Taking place on Sunday, July 22 at 1:00pm, the clinic will focus on more advanced drills that touring teams use to build their skill levels.

The clinic is FREE to all TUC members. Register online for the clinic and check in at the TUC tent at Mid Season ‘Disc Central’ on the day. See you there!

We are now entering Week 6 of the TUC Summer Season. For Wednesday and Thursday Night League, the first round of shuffles has taken place. The top 2 teams from each tier move up to the next tier, and the bottom two teams in each tier move down. So you may find yourself in a new tier or one that looks a little different than last week!

As for Monday and Tuesday League, the pyramid system appears to be working well, moving teams up and down the ladder based upon their results and the teams they play. The system will continuously shuffle teams throughout the season and we welcome your feedback!

Every Friday and Sunday

Every Sunday from 2:30 – 5:30pm all TUC members are welcome to come on out and play pickup. We will play at Riverdale Park East (or move to Riverdale West if there is too much traffic). Pickup is completely informal and voluntary, but lots of fun.

Also starting June 1, Friday pickup will also be available at Riverdale East throughout the summer, from 6:30pm each night. See you there!

Raining Outside? Not Sure if you are Playing Your Games?

To check your game status on game days call our TUC Weather Hotline – 416.426.7432 – any time after 3:30pm each day. If games are canceled we will indicate it on the hotline, as well as post a warning on the home page by 3:30pm. If games are not canceled, play on! If you experience inclement weather during your games it is at the discretion of the captains to make the call – view our Bad Weather Policy and our Game Cancelation Policy for more details.
